China Daily: Troops Crushed Demonstrations in ‘89
Finally, the Chinese state media has admitted the Tiananmen Massacre. Well, it was only for a few hours, and probably some poor sod is on his way to the gulag right now. But on Aug. 8 the China Daily Web site picked up a Reuters Olympics story that contained the line: “Security was tight around Tiananmen Square, where troops crushed pro-democracy demonstrations in 1989 with huge loss of life, as crowds gathered for the celebrations.” As blogger Roland Soong noted, the words disappeared 12 hours later.
