Austrians Love Asians

June 28th, 2009 by TT

Trying to find some decent Chinese food in Vienna, TT stumbled across a local chain called “Mr. Lee” whose marketers seem to have taken sensitivity training from the Spanish Olympic basketball team. Perhaps this is supposed to be an Asian person who has had double eyelid surgery demonstrating what they used to look like?

    Hey, nice! A satire maybe?

  2. Culture Says:

Seriously, do you people march around all day looking for things to get offended by? Jeez, it wasn’t this uptight even when I was back in Sunday school.

Has it occured to you that this ad campaign might have been the work of an Asian (whoever owns the restaurant) and not an Austrian? To be fair the rest of the world isn’t any better. When people speak of Austria all they think of are Hitler and the Sound of Music. Those are just equally-lame stereotypes.

Most Chinese laugh at, not with, the idea of sensitivity training and political correctness. Some young Chinese I’ve met, when confronted by Westerners about the heavy-handed censorship of the Communist Party, respond that “political correctness” in the West amounts to our own form of censorship, only worse because our citizens willingly participate.
